    Travellers tales

NSW - Broken Hill - A Story from Jennifer in California, USA.
From Jennifer - An Aussie Living in California - A Day in the Bush
    From: donkaleta@dellnet.com

Who knew Broken Hill could be such an exciting place. I know everyone talks about the Great Barrier Reef and yes it really is beautiful, but there is more to the land down under. Now I'm from Sydney and thought Broken Hill would be nothing but dirt, and didn't even want to go, but let me tell you...

My now "Yankee" husband wanted to head to the bush, so here we are on Boxing Day ( the day after Christmas ) driving around in 42 degree heat, that's Celsius. It was so flamin' hot I couldn't stand it. There was no one around so I took it all off, we were in Mootwingee National Park and there were only the roo's to see me. Besides us Aussie's are not too shy when it comes to that. Even the roo's were so hot they didn't even move when we got close, I went into one of the loo's and I scared a big one, it went hopping right out. My hubby even chased a few, like he had a chance to catch them.

There really is a lot to do in the "bush", from national parks, wildlife, art, mining towns, and of course the pubs. We stayed at an underground hotel in White Cliffs, not too far out of the way. It was a real treat, it was so cool underground and the rock walls were so beautiful. The colours, all shades of reds, brown and orange. You know it took an American working in Australia to get me to go out there. I would recommend it to anyone who is visiting. There are a lot of small art galleries, Pro Hart has one out there. The main street in Broken Hill, Argent St has all the locals pubs a town can handle. I'm pretty sure we went to all of them. We would go in and before you know it we would be chatting to one of the locals. Always telling us of another spot to go to.

Not far out of town is Silverton, almost a ghost town; but it had a pub and serves meat pies. We were a novelty to the camels roaming about, I'm still not sure if they were wild or not. You can always spot a couple of emus running along the side of the road. They are the funniest things, they would run along the side of our car. They never thought to move left or right off the road, just straight in front of you. We clocked one doing 30kph.

Now, I'm living in the States and every time we are back in Australia we head to the bush, always finding some new spot. It is the real Australia, lots of red soil, scrub and wildlife that are not behind bars. We have now seen a lot of Australia from coast to coast and we look forward to seeing more.

Hope you get a chance to go walkabout.

Editorial Note: We believe that using Broken Hill as a base, and spending maybe 3-4 days driving in different directions, is the best and most comprehensive desert experience available in Australia.
