    Canberra (including Lake George)
The National Capital - an elegant and interesting city.
Although it is not part of New South Wales the Australian Capital Territory is surrounded by the state. It is here that the thriving and rapidly expanding national capital, Canberra, is home to the country's public servants and politicians. Of course it has grown so rapidly over the past thirty years that it is now a lot more than politicians and public servants.

Canberra is an artificial city. It did not grow up because of a natural need or natural advantages. It grew up as a compromise. It is a city created as a result of interstate rivalries between New South Wales and Victoria. Where common sense would have demanded that either Sydney or Melbourne become the national capital (thus integrating Federal politics and national administration into the real world of an existing city) political sense said it should be roughly equidistant from the two cities.

In 1908, after much debate, it was decided that 2 330 square kilometres of sheep grazing land in New South Wales would become the site for the capital city. Three years later the Australian Capital Territory was handed over to the Commonwealth Government and that same year a competition was launched for the design of a city for 25 000 people. The competition was won by the American Walter Burley Griffin whose design, based on a series of geometrically precise circles and axes, was similar to the street patterns of Washington, DC and Paris.

Boating on Lake Burley Griffin in front of the National Library

Today Canberra is a city of great aesthetic beauty with broad roadways, superb parklands, and many elegant buildings. On a clear spring or autumn day it is a city which is captivating in its graciousness. Events like Floriade, held each spring, highlight the natural beauties of the city.

The views across Lake Burley Griffin are breathtaking. From the War Memorial it is possible to look straight across to the elegant new Parliament House on Capital Hill. From the shores of the lake the reflections of buildings such as the High Court and the National Library are exceptional.

Yet, for all this natural and artificial beauty more derogatory comments have been made about Canberra than any national capital deserves.

Percy Deane, secretary to the Prime Minister's Department under Billy Hughes, declared that the best view of Canberra was "from the back of a departing train".

Espeth Huxley, sister of Aldous Huxley, described it as the most middle class city in the world and one of the early parliamentarians suggested that it was nothing more than a sheep paddock.

Don Dunstan, a former Premier of South Australia, astutely captured a widespread Australian conception of the national capital when he observed "Canberra has such great potential beauty. But something is lacking. The city is like a woman expensively coiffured, dressed, and made-up, well educated, courteous - and frigid. Canberra boasts more than a million trees and shrubs, but many are exotics and most are neatly regimented. Pretty, but it could be a city of anywhere. When you sit up in the Lakeside Hotel and look out at the nightscape, the only thing seemingly missing is Flash Gordon whizzing around the curve below. But what is really missing is any feeling of Australia."

In his inimitable way Mungo MacCallum, a long time member of the Canberra Press Gallery summed up this national feeling of ever-so-slight displeasure when he noted that "Everybody knocks Canberra from the amazing Joh Bjelke-Petersen (a conservative premier of Queensland) who thinks it's a sort of little Moscow on the southern tablelands to the Sydney radio commentator who said that the only good view of the place was out the back window of a car speeding north".

The first Europeans into the area were Joseph Wild, James Vaughan and Charles Throsby Smith who discovered the Limestone Plains upon which modern day Canberra is sited. The following year Dr Charles Throsby reached Tuggeranong and two years later (1823) Joshua Moore's Canberry station was established. By 1825 Robert Campbell had settled at Duntroon (the homestead still stands) and a decade later the first Lanyon homestead was built in the Tuggeranong Valley.

Some sort of small community had been established by 1845 when St Johns Church (which still stands) was completed. Three years later the small community had its own school and by the 1860s most of the area was settled by farmers.

With the declaration of the Australian Federation in 1901 it was decided that there had to be a national capital. Numerous stupid names were suggested - Gladstone, Cromwell, Eucalypta, Thirstyville and, famously, Sydmelbane (to appease state rivalries) - and a parliamentary committee headed off around the country to find a suitable location. They inspected Orange, Bathurst, Lyndhurst, Tumut, Armidale, Bombala, Nowra, Eden, Dalgety, Goulburn and Yass amongst others and eventually decided on Canberra.

A quixotic Canadian, King O'Malley, who had become a Member of Parliament on a platform which included putting toilets in trains and getting rid of barmaids, reckoned that Canberra was ideal because hot climates led 'in three generations their lineal descendants will be degenerate. I found them in San Domingo on a Sabbath morning going to a cock fight with a rooster under each arm and a sombrero on their heads.'

In 1909 Canberra was chosen and by 1911 the territory had been created. In that same year (1911) the first intake of cadets occurred at the military academy at Duntroon. In 1927 the first Parliament House was opened and over a very extended period (it was still going on in the 1960s) the head offices of Federal government departments were slowly moved to Canberra.

People seeking additional information on Canberra (particularly the history of the city and the surrounding area) should check out http://www.acn.net.au/articles/1999/02/canberra.htm which has literally hundreds of links to specialist sites which offer very detailed information.

Things to see:   [Top of page]

    Tourist Information
There is no substitute for a visit to the Canberra Visitors Centre in Northbourne Avenue. It is open from 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. and has assistants who can answer queries and provide suitable maps and information. For details contact (02) 6205 0044.

    1. A City Tour
    Parliament House

    Parliament House
Parliament House which was built on Capital Hill overlooking Lake Burley Griffin dominates Canberra and can be seen from nearly every part of the city. Designed so that visitors can actually walk on top of the building, the new Parliament House boasts an excellent art gallery and facilities which feature Australian timbers and gracious interiors. There are guided tours every 30 minutes. For details of opening times (usually 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.) contact the Sergeant at Arms on (02) 6277 4889.

    Old Parliament House
The first parliament house in Canberra was completed in 1927 at a cost of triple the initial estimate. The architect was John Smith Murdoch, who was so determined his style should consistently prevail that he even designed mostof the original furniture and waste paper baskets. Timber from almost every state was utilised. For sixty one years it was the hub of the nation¹s political life. It was replaced in 1988 by the superb new Parliament House which was built on Capital Hill overlooking Lake Burley Griffin. There are guided tours by informed insiders and a range of changing exhibitions. It is much more interesting that you would expect, with a hidden safe revealed by stepping on a particular floorboard, a secret hiding place for journalists above the opposition leader's office, doodles made in the drying cement by the original builders, and other eccentric facts revealed by the guides. For more information and opening times contact (02) 6270 8222.

    Hyatt Hotel
Located near both the old and new Parliament Houses this is a perfectly preserved (although modernised) hotel from the 1930s which captures the times so effectively that it is worth wandering through just to experience what Canberra was like soon after the first Parliament House opened. It has a range of restaurants and accommodation.

    National Library
Outstanding library with a huge and ever-increasing collection of Australiana. It now houses over 3 million books. Its attraction to the visitor is its regular exhibitions which range widely from literary to historical subjects. The exhibitions change on a regular basis. There is a canteen in the building which is open to the general public and provides access to the Internet.

National Science and Technology Centre (Questacon)
Located in King Edward Terrace between the High Court and the National Library, this is heaven for kids and consequently is hugely popular in holidays and a natural watering hole for school excursions. Most of the exhibits are 'hands on' and they are cleverly arranged in a huge drum-like tower which has a spiral staircase. For general information 1800 020 603. It is very comprehensive and lasts for nearly five minutes.

A sculpture of pears greets the visitor to the National Gallery

    National Gallery of Australia
Located in Parkes Place next door to the High Court this is the home of the national collection of paintings. This does not mean it has the best collection of paintings in the country. The major state galleries in New South Wales and Victoria also have impressive collections. The National Gallery was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1982 and regularly hosts major international art exhibitions. Perhaps its most famous painting is Jackson Pollock's 'Blue Poles' which was bought, amidst much controversy, for $1.3 million in 1973. Recent legislation has made it free of charge although this does not apply to travelling exhibitions. It is open from 10.00 a.m - 5.00 p.m. For more details contact (02) 6240 6411.

    The High Court
Located on King Edward Terrace the High Court can be fascinating or extremely boring. When it is changing Australian history (the famous 'Wik' decision) it is a place of great importance. Most of the time it is resolving complex matters of law which have little interest to the average citizen. Still, you can sit in on cases and observe. It is the highest court in Australia. The cafeteria is quite popular with public servants in the surrounding area. Contact (02) 6270 6811 for opening times.

    Blundells Cottage
An historic cottage on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin. Built around 1860, this little stone cottage in the heart of Canberra is a reminder of an era before the National Capital was even conceived. The Cottage was originally part of the 'Duntroon' estate and home to tenant farm workers. Today the parliamentary triangle frames the cottage and visitors can have a 'hands on' experience of life before the city grew and became the national capital. Open 11.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m. daily except Christmas Day. Adults $4, concession $2, family $10. Phone 02 6257 1068.

    The War Memorial

Australian War Memorial and Anzac Parade
Located in Limestone Avenue, Campbell this is a remarkably impressive building which encompasses a superb display covering Australia's involvement in war. There are excellent displays and a suitable level of solemnity touches the Pool of Reflection with its Roll of Honour which lists 102,000 Australians who have died at war. There are fascinating displays of memorabilia, paintings and models. It is open from 10.00 a.m - 5.00 p.m. For more details contact (02) 6243 4211.

St Johns Anglican Church and Schoolhouse Museum
Located on Constitution Avenue east of Canberra city and north of Lake Burley Griffin, St Johns Anglican Church is one of Canberra's oldest buildings. It was designed by Robert Campbell and on 12 March, 1845 it was consecrated by Bishop Broughton. The original building was short-lived. In 1851 the main tower was struck by lightning. The church authorities then invited Edmund Blacket (architect of the Quadrangle at Sydney University) was to design a new one. You will notice that Blacket decided on a very simple three stage stone tower with corner buttresses. In the graveyard adjacent to the church are gravestones dating from before the church's consecration and the nearby St Johns Schoolhouse, which was the first schoolhouse in Canberra, was completed in the late 1840s and totally restored in 1969.

    Museum of Science

    National Film and Sound Archive
Located in McCoy Circuit, Acton this is Australia's finest collection of old films and sound recordings. It regularly shows historic films and documentaries. Visits are well worthwhile with material dating back to the 1890s. It is open from 9.00 a.m - 5.00 p.m. For more details contact (02) 6209 3111. Over the road is the extraordinary Museum of Science.

Lake Burley Griffin and the Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet
Canberra, the national capital, is a carefully designed city of circuits and long elegant roads. In the middle of the city is the artificial Lake Burley Griffin, named after the city¹s town planner, which is surrounded by important buildings like the High Court and the National Library. One of the highlights of the lake is the Cook waterjet which, most days, shoots water high above the lake.

    National Museum

    National Museum of Australia
Judged Australia¹s best major tourist attraction in 2005, the National Museum of Australia in Canberra celebrates the land, nation and people of Australia by exploring the key issues, events and people that have shaped our nation. The Museum has five permanent exhibitions that bring together Australia¹s stories, each presented with state-of-the-art technology and hands-on interactive exhibitions. From the First Australians gallery, which features the histories and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, through to Nation, an exhibition of all things uniquely Australian, the Museum has something for everyone. Open everyday except Christmas Day from 9.00 am-5.00 pm. General admission is free.

    2. The Embassies
    Driving Around the Embassies
Most of the Embassies in Canberra are located in Yarralumla to the west of Parliament House and Red Hill to the south of Capital Hill. Some, like the huge Chinese Embassy and the United Kingdom, can be seen on Commonwealth Avenue as you drive towards Parliament House but most require a map and a little enthusiasm to find. While some are very predictable (the US Embassy is typically red brick and modelled on the stately mansions designed by Sir Christopher Wren for Williamsburg in Virginia - you will recognise the style immediately) many have considerable charm and are well worth visiting. The Indonesian Embassy at 8 Darwin Avenue, Yarralumla, for example, has a pleasant garden out the front and is built like a traditional Indonesian village house. The Japanese at 112 Empire Circuit, Yarralumla, is characterised by a beautiful formal Japanese garden and a traditional Japanese tea house.

    3. In the Area
    The Lookouts - Mt Ainslie
Continue east beyond the War Memorial on Fairbairn Avenue until you reach Mount Ainslie Drive. This offers a view to the south across the city from a vantage point which is almost directly in line with the War Memorial and the Parliament House.

    The Lookouts - Mt Pleasant
Located near the Australian Defence Force Academy at Duntroon this lookout offers a view west along Lake Burley Griffin.

    The Lookouts - Red Hill
Red Hill is one of the many popular Canberra lookouts. If you take the southern axis away from Parliament House (called Melbourne Ave) you eventually reach Red Hill Drive which will take you to the top of Red Hill which provides an unusual view back on Capital Hill.

The Lookouts - Black Mountain, Telecom Tower and the National Botanic Gardens
The Telecom Tower on Black Mountain can be seen from most parts of Canberra and certainly from the foreshores of Lake Burley Griffin. It is easily accessible off Clunies Ross Street from either Parkes Way or Barry Drive. The Telecom Tower is 195 metres above the summit of Black Mountain and offers visitors three public viewing areas as well as a restaurant, snack bar and theatrette. It was opened in 1980 and houses Canberra's radio and television facilities. For more information contact (02) 6248 1911.

    Australian Institute of Sport
Located on Leverrier Crescent in the suburb of Bruce, the Australian Institute of Sport is one of Australia's great success stories. Created out the country's inability to compete on an international level it has established itself as a training powerhouse and produced a number of notable Olympic gold medallists and world champions. There are public tours at 11.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. and the facilities are open seven days a week. For more details and bookings contact (02) 6252 1444.

    Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve

The visitor can expect to see both red and grey kangaroos, magpie geese, koalas and satin bower birds in a variety of flora environments. There are guided tours and the park opens from 9.00 a.m. each morning. The walking trails in the park range from short easy tracks (Hanging Rock is on 500 metres) to extensive walks of which the most difficult is the 12.5 km walk to Camel Back which takes around 3 and a half hours. For more information and details of tours contact (02) 6237 5120.

    Tidbinbilla Deep Space Tracking Station
Located off Paddys River Road at Tidbinbilla (south west of Canberra via Cotter Road), this is one of only three deep tracking stations in the world. There is a Visitors Information Centre which has photographs and presentations on space and space exploration. It opens from 9.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m. For more information and details of tours contact (02) 6201 7838.

    Lake George

    Lake George
If you are travelling to Canberra from Sydney you will pass Lake George. Most of the time it is nothing more than water in the distance and sheep grazing on particularly good pastures near the road. In reality, when full it covers 155 square kilometres being 10 kilometres wide and 25 kilometres long. This makes it one of Australia's largest freshwater lakes. Lake George is a freak phenomenon. It has been known to disappear virtually overnight. It was first sighted by a European when Joseph Wild reached it in 1820. He was so impressed by the site, and obviously so out of touch with where he was, that he thought he had reached the Pacific coast. In 1820 it was named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie. The lake has been totally dry in 1837, 1870, 1902, most of the1930s and the early1980s. It has been completely full in 1852, 1897, 1925, the 1950s and the mid-1980s. There is no pattern to this strange phenomenon.
