Whim Creek
A solitary pub in the middle of nowhere.
Located 1645 km north of Perth via the North West
Coastal Highway Whim Creek is literally nothing more than a rather
splendid old pub with a few cheap airconditioned rooms for the people
who come to the area with mining companies trying to find new rich ore
lodes. There are currently a number of mining companies, including some
of the very big ones, exploring in the area.
Ironically, although Whim Creek is now nothing more than
a solitary pub, it was here that the first major mineral discovery in
the Pilbara was made when copper was discovered back in 1872.
By the late 1870s copper from Whim Creek was being mined
and exported to the United Kingdom through the tiny port of Balla Balla
(now nothing more than ruins). The town, known at the time as Whim
Well, boasted several pubs, a police station, a post office and a bakery.
The hotel, which is an attractive building with a very
friendly country pubı feel, was built in 1898. For a time it was the
home and watering place for the many German copper miners who came to
the area. In 1914, with the outbreak of war, these miners were all interned.
Today Whim Creek has to be the most charming
stopover point between Carnarvon and Broome.
