Located 497 km east of Melbourne via the Princes Highway, Genoa has the distinction of being the last township on the Princes Highway before New South Wales - or the first contact with Victoria if youčre coming the other direction. Situated on the Genoa River just before the turn off to Gipsy Point and Mallacoota, it is 62 km south from Eden, 121 km northeast from Orbost and 23 km from Mallacoota.

Genoa is small village. In the 1970s it came to prominence when some tracks of amphibian mammals dating back 350 million years were found in the Genoa River Gorge. These tracks are some of the earliest evidence of mammals on earth.

For most visitors Genoa is strategically situated on the wild and beautiful East Gippsland coast. It provides ready access to Mallacoota, Gipsy Point and the wetlands around the town are noted for the vast flocks of black swans.

Wingan Nature Walk
From Genoa there is a track leading out to the Croajingolong National Park where the Wingan Nature Walk (which lasts about one and a half hours) moves from the camping site through stands of bloodwoods, melaleucas, swamp paper-barks and wild cherry trees. The observant visitor may see feathertail gliders, eastern water skinks, kookaburras, sugar gliders, lyrebirds, eastern whipbirds and possums. The track continues to Fly Cove where George Bass anchored in 1797. This windswept coast is home to soldier crabs and pelicans. The Skerries (islands which can be seen from the beach) are an important habitat for Australian fur-seals and little penguins.

The Victorian Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands has produced a single sheet for visitors which helps to identify the diverse fauna and flora in the area.
