Donnybrook Spa (including Kal Kallo)
Melbourne's closest and the state's first mineral spring
Donnybrook is 34 km north of Melbourne, just 2 km east
of the Hume Highway. It is best known for the Donnybrook Mineral
Spring. The road to the spa from the Hume Highway traverses a bluestone
bridge built in the 1870s.
Things to see:
Donnybrook Spa Picnic Park
Located in Springs Rd, this is the oldest-known
sparkling water spring in Victoria and the nearest to Melbourne. German
immigrant August Sattler, who used the spring water in soft drinks, is
responsible for developing the 12.5 ha recreational area around the
spring. There are barbecues, undercover huts, five lots of playground
equipment, a kiosk, toilets and, on weekends, horse and cart rides. It
is open weekdays from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., extended to 6.30 p.m. on
weekends.
Kal Kallo
Kal Kallo is a ghost town located on the Hume Highway,
1 km north of the turnoff to Donnybrook. It was the first overnight
stop for those travelling overland from Melbourne to Sydney. As such it
was an important township with an all-important water supply in the
form of Rocky Water Holes. When it opened in 1842, the Fountain Inn
became the first of seventeen such establishments at Donnybrook Spa,
particularly after gold was discovered at Beechworth, thus accelerating traffic on
the north-bound road. At its height the town had several churches,
along with a number of supply shops. Little remains today other than
the Kal Kallo Hotel and a disused Presbyterian church.
