Cressy
One of Victoria's oldest towns, reflecting
French connection
Cressy is located 139 km west of Melbourne on the
Hamilton Highway. It is one of the state's older towns, being formed at
a road junction connecting Melbourne and Geelong with Port Fairy and
Portland. It is named after Crecy in France, the home town of Frederick
and Rosine Duverney who established the Frenchman's Inn here in 1840.
The present establishment of that name was built on the site of the
original which is gone, although a bluestone church (1862) and an old
iron bridge (1880) remain from the early days.
