Somerset
Beach
town which is part of Burnie's commuter belt
Somerset is located 6 km from Burnie (it is
realistically a bedroom town to Burnie) and 156 km from Launceston on
the Cam River. It is a basically a combination of a beach town with a
service centre for the surrounding industries. There's a very small
shopping area with a Post Office and a Somerset pub. The town centre is
literally nothing more than a Police Station, Post Office, General
Store and Surgery. Somerset is one of those towns where people have
conspired to make the beachfront as inaccessible as possible. The sand
dune which runs along the beachfront prevents the houses from having
views over the water and there is a railway line which runs along the foreshore.

Water Activities
The area is a popular fishing haunt for both ocean
and river fishing. Those who want to try their luck catching brown
trout can fish in the Cam River. The beach, which is nearly 3 km long,
has both good swimming and an active Life Saving Club. There are also
pleasant walks along the foreshore which is accessible from the Esplanade.
