Chudleigh
Tiny
village west of Launceston
Chudleigh is a tiny village located 64 km west of
Launceston between Deloraine and Mole Creek. It was named after a
village of the same name in Devonshire, England.
The area was first settled in the 1830s. In 1830
Lieutenant Travers Hartley Vaughan was granted land in the district. He
sold this in 1837 to Henry Reed, a larger than life character who had
arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1827 and in the space of a decade had
acquired considerable wealth through property, shipping and whaling.
The property, which had been known as 'Native Hut Corner' was renamed
'Wesley Dale' and it was to here that Reed would retreat for the
summer.
There is little of great interest in Chudleigh.
Things to see:
Bentley Farm
Bentley Farm (now part of Tasmania's unique historic
accommodation) was built in 1879 on land which had been used for
grazing cattle as early as 1827. It is notable for the fact that the
walls of the farm house are three bricks thick. In the main street
there is also an old surveyor's building which was constructed about
1840 and the remnants of a two storey hotel (it is now only one storey)
which was built around 1850 by Dan Picket, a ticket-of-leave man.
