    The beach at Port Vincent

    Port Vincent (including Port Julia)
Pleasant holiday resort on the Yorke Peninsula
Located 194 km west of Adelaide via the Princes Highway and 217 km south of Port Pirie, Port Vincent is more upmarket than most of the holiday resorts on the coasts of the Yorke Peninsula. There's a decent beach - the houses along the foreshore are far more salubrious than most. It doesn't suffer from the very temporary feel of places like Port Clinton and Price. It has an uncharacteristic and charming sense of stability. The area behind the beach is characterised by a number of very attractive sandstone buildings.

Prior to European settlement the area around Port Broughton was inhabited by the Narangga Aborigines whose lands spread across the entire Yorke Peninsula and included the Hummocks Range and the area lying up the coast to the head of Gulf St Vincent. They lived a simple and remarkably harmonious life sustained by the produce of the area and unaffected by competition for their lands.

The first European into the area was Matthew Flinders who reached the shores of the Yorke Peninsula in 1802 as he made his way slowly around the coast of South Australia.

The town was first known as Surveyors Point and established its importance as a port from the middle of the 19th century when clippers and other sailing ships came up Gulf St Vincent to load wheat for shipment around the world.

    Port Julia
Well worth a visit it is only 12 km north of Port Vincent and has no facilities. This is really the essence of 'getting away from it all' on the Yorke Peninsula. There is good fishing. The beach is delightful and the cliffs are spectacular.
