Boats at Port Clinton at low tide

    Port Clinton (including Price)
Small seaside village with good fishing
Port Clinton is located 125 km west of Adelaide via the Princes Highway and 130 km south of Port Pirie. The town is a popular destination for holidaymakers eager to escape the summer heat in Adelaide. Its attractive sandy beach (an exception in an area where mangroves predominate) is ideal for swimming and relaxing and the waters are ideal for fishing and crabbing.

This whole area, the upper reaches of St Vincent Gulf, is characterised by mangroves and muddy crabs which are a nursery for fish, full of interesting wildlife and rich with crabs. Not surprisingly people interested in aquatic wildlife are drawn to the area. At low tide the sea seems to be kilometres from the town.

The first European to explore the area was Matthew Flinders who traversed the coastline in 1802. He waded ashore across the mudflats and named both Gulf St Vincent and the Yorke Peninsula after friends in Britain who had supported his voyage of exploration.

Today Port Clinton has a wonderful temporary feel. Holiday makers have built kit homes and the centre of the town is a caravan park. Not surprisingly the Port Clinton Caravan Park and General Store are central to the town's survival.

    The Wheatsheaf Hotel, Price

    Price
7 km south of Port Clinton is the tiny coastal township of Price. It has no beach but extensive mangrove swamplands. The town was established in 1882 and has a number of historic buildings including the local school (1885) and the Wheatsheaf Hotel (over 100 years old). There is also a thoroughfare known as the 'One and All Road'. Today the town is sustained by the salt mining of a number of huge saltpans.

    Clinton Conservation Park
This park covers 1854 hectares of mangrove swamp at the head of Gulf St Vincent. It stretches from north of Port Clinton around the top of the Gulf and down almost to Port Wakefield and is characterised by mangroves, native plants and a great diversity of birdlife.
