Yuleba
Tiny rural service town.
A tiny township on the Warrego Highway 419 km west of
Brisbane and 60 km east of Roma, Yuleba is the administrative centre
for the Bendemere Shire. It was an important centre for some years
prior to 1910 when it was a railway terminus for the area to the west.
When the line was extended to Roma and beyond Yuleba declined in
importance so that now it is no more than a town of about 300 people on
the road from Miles to Roma.
It is said that the word 'yuleba' was an Aboriginal word
meaning 'the place of water lilies' which, in this case, seems
plausible as the main attractions in the area consist of Judd's Lagoon,
a beautiful lagoon with both water lilies and a fascinating variety of
bird life, and some Aboriginal rock wells which are believed to be
hundreds of years old.
