The Millaa Millaa Falls from the car park.

    Millaa Millaa
Attractive town in the Atherton Tablelands (Cairns Highlands) surrounded by a number of exceptionally pretty waterfalls.
Located 327 km north of Townsville, 109 km south of Cairns and 821 m above sea-level, Millaa Millaa lies on the southern edge of the Atherton Tablelands. It is a tiny, attractive settlement with a wide and uncluttered main street, brightened by a vivid display of flowering trees and bushes running down one side.

Like most of the towns on the Tablelands Millaa Millaa is economically one-dimensional. It is essentially a town servicing a local dairy industry. The hills around the town are dotted with the black and white of numerous Fresian herds including a number of stud herds.

The name Millaa Millaa is said to mean 'waterfalls' in the language of the local Aborigines. There is a story which suggests that it was Christie Palmerston (see Port Douglas for details of his life), who gave the town its name. In 1884 Palmerston, an expert at constructing routes from the Tablelands to the sea, created a track from Innisfail (then known as Geraldton) through Millaa Millaa to the mining settlement at Herberton.

Land around Millaa Millaa was first settled by whites in 1910. The following year the Eacham Shire Council was formed. In 1921 the railway, which had been working its way slowly south from Cairns for over thirty years, finally reached Millaa Millaa. The town was the terminus for the line until it closed in 1964. During its time as a railhead Millaa Millaa saw a boom in the local timber industry.

    Eacham Historical Museum
In the centre of the main street is the excellent Eacham Historical Museum. It is usually open most mornings but can be opened if you telephone (070) 97 2147. The museum has a range of really interesting Aboriginal artefacts and some very well presented displays of photographs and old pieces of equipment from the Millaa Millaa area. There are some particularly fascinating pieces from the local butter factory which opened in 1930 and was amalgamated with the larger factory at Malanda in the 1970s.

    The Millaa Millaa Falls

    The Falls
A couple of kilometres out of town are the Millaa Millaa Falls. Lazy visitors can actually sit in their cars and watch the falls as the car park is the viewing area. To get there head east on the Palmerston Highway and turn north at the signpost.

Millaa Millaa Falls are the first of a series of three falls on what is known as 'The Waterfalls Circuit', a circular trip of less than one hour which encompasses the Zillie Falls and the Ellinjaa Falls. There are at least five more sets of falls within the area for people who never tire of watching water cascade from great heights. People brave enough to dive into the Bridal Veil Falls can walk away with a "Polar Bear" certificate which is provided by the local shops.

    Millaa Millaa Marvels
Located at 4 Main Street, this is an emporium selling all manner of items, including alpaca jumpers, berets, shawls, gloves, capes, scarves etc, as well as larger ladies clothing. Other items include hand-pointed glassware, ornaments, organic fruit and vegetables and souvenirs. They are open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., tel: (07) 4097 2510.

    Millaa Millaa Crafts & Souvenirs
Millaa Millaa Crafts & Souvenirs sells local arts and crafts. In recent years the Cairns Highlands/Atherton Tablelands have attracted a lot of talented craftspeople and their work is represented in this shop which is located in the Main Street. The shop also offers great tasting coffee and tea (all locally produced) with light snacks and cakes.
