    Marburg
Marburg is a small town located just off the Warrego Highway between Brisbane and Toowoomba.
Located 55 km west of Brisbane, Marburg is a tiny, rather inconsequential little place located just off the Warrego Highway between Brisbane and Toowoomba. In the early years of its development the town had many names, including Sally Owens Plains, Rosewood Scrub and Frederick. It was retitled Marburg under rather mysterious circumstances. Some reports suggest that the name was given to the town in the 1870s by the German settlers who felt that the town resembled a place named Marburg in Germany. See Laidley for further information on the German occupation of the area.

Another version is that a local station manager named the town Marburg because the newly arrived Germans insisted upon calling it simply 'ober dar' (i.e., over there).

The town grew rapidly in the 1870s. The local school was built in 1879 and the Marburg Hotel was completed in 1881. The Hotel is still the most significant building in the town.

Strong anti-German feeling during World War I resulted in the town changing its name to Townshend but this was short-lived and, by 1920, it had returned to Marburg.

    Marburg Hotel
The Marburg Hotel, a distinctive Queensland pub which is now listed by the National Trust, was completed in 1881. The hotel is the most significant building in the town.

    Woodlands
Nearby is the gracious 'Woodlands', a stately home which was once the centre of a large and prosperous sugar plantation. It was built in 1889 under the direction of the architect, George Brockwell Gill and is currently owned by the Ipswich Grammar School. Its square tower and elaborate lacework on the verandahs make it one of the most interesting and distinctive mansions in the area.
