Logan City
Large suburban area between Brisbane and the Gold Coast
Logan City is the name given to a governmental area
which lies between Brisbane (the CBD of Brisbane is 19 km to the north)
and the Gold Coast (51 km to the south). Ipswich lies to the west. It
is 12 km long and 25 km wide.
Created in the late 1970s, Logan City was, for some time, one
of the fastest growing centres in Australia with a population
increasing from 120 000 to 160 000 between 1986 and 1996. That growth
rate has recently stabilised allowing the city planners to concentrate
on service delivery rather than merely keeping up with developing
infrastructure. The vast majority of Logan residents are under thirty
years of age and a huge component are school-age children. This
reflects the fact that housing is comparatively cheap. Thus Logan is
very much a young suburban area with over 160 ethnic groups. There are
numerous suburbs with Browns Plains claiming the greatest number of
residents - 24000.
The service sector constitutes a little over 50 % of local
industry. It is indicative of the nature of Logan City that rural
industries constitute less than 1 % of the total. About half of Logan's
business is centred in the suburbs of Slacks Creek, Springwood and
Underwood. The city has good traffic flowing to its freeways and
motorways. Thus it is only 20 minutes from the Port of Brisbane and 25
minutes from Brisbane International Airport.
