Kajabbi (including Lake Julius)
Tiny, sleepy settlement in western Queensland.
Kajabbi is a tiny settlement which really amounts
to no more than a pub and a couple of houses in absolutely desolate
landscape on the banks of the frequently dry Leichhardt River. It is
118 km north east of Mount Isa and 100 km north west of Cloncurry.
There was a time when Kajabbi was an important centre. The
nearby mines at Dobbyn and Mount Cuthbert attracted copper miners to
the area and, as a railhead in the 1920s, it was a location where the
cattle owners from the state's far north west brought their herds for
shipment to the coast.
It was near Kajabbi that the Kalkadoons fought a
pitched battle against the whites who had invaded their tribal lands.
It was a predictable story. The cattle had depleted the feed for the
native animals. With a lack of native food the Kalkadoons had killed
some cattle. The whites met this 'attack' on their property by calling
for assistance from the military. Under the leadership of a man named
Urquhart the troops met the Kalkadoons at Battle Mountain in 1884.
Spears were no competition against armed and mounted troops. The
predictable result was that nearly all of the Kalkadoons were
slaughtered.
The publican at the Kalkadoon Hotel (a quaint turn of the
century outback hotel) can direct visitors to the old mines and to
Battle Mountain.
Things to see:
Lake Julius
25 km west of Kajabbi is Lake Julius, a freshwater dam
for Mount Isa Mines Ltd. The lake is a popular spot for fishing and
other leisure activities. There is a recreation camp on the shores of
the lake with dormitory accommodation. People wanting to stay overnight
