Crows Nest
(including Cabarlah)
An attractive and unusual country town.
Crows Nest is a genuinely unusual Australian rural
town, built around a large and attractive village green. Located 179 km
north-west of Brisbane, 45 km from Toowoomba, and 527 m above
sea-level, it lies in attractive undulating country and services the
surrounding beef and dairy cattle industries.
In the centre of the village green is the statue of Jimmy
Crow, after whom the town was named, and nearby is the tree which was
his 'nest'. The inscription on the Crows Nest tree offers an
explanation of how Crows Nest got its name: 'In the early days when
teamsters visited this area Jimmy Crow, an Aboriginal named by early
settlers, used a hollow tree as his gunyah. He was relied on for
information and directions. This place was used as a camping place by
teamsters and travellers and became known as Jimmy Crow's Nest hence
the name 'Crows Nest'.

Carbethon Folk Museum
At the northern end of the town, on the New England
Highway, is the Carbethon Folk Museum. It is an excellent and
comprehensive folk museum. The displays include a number of interesting
buildings (an old wireless shop, a slab hut, an old Baptist Church) and
a collection of over 9000 pieces of interesting memorabilia, including
a covered wagon which stands outside. It is open Thursdays and Sundays
from 1.00pm - 5.00pm and from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on public
holidays. It can be opened at other times by phoning (07) 4698 4162.
Salts Antiques
Nearby is Salts Antiques, housed in a beautiful
Edwardian building with signs outside declaring the business to be
'Specialists in Victorian Furniture, Direct Importers from the U.K.,
and a member of the London and Provincial Antique Dealers'. They do
indeed have an amazing display of items, ranging from old bottles to
antique furniture. It is open from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. seven days a
week but even if it is closed the window display is worth looking at.
Salts is located at 1 Thallon St, tel: (07) 4698 1266.
Crows Nest National Park
To the east of Crows Nest is the excellent Crows Nest
National Park, 489 hectares of rugged country on the edge of the Great
Dividing Range which includes the dramatic Crows Nest Falls and a deep
rainforest gorge in an area characterised by open eucalypt forest.
Visitors can explore the walking track which leads into the Valley of
Diamonds where Crows Nest Creek meanders through its deep gorge. For
further information ring (07) 4698 1296.
The Farmers Arms
A few kilometres south of Crows Nest, and only 10 km
from Toowoomba, is the tiny hamlet of Cabarlah. Its great, and only,
claim to fame is the Farmers Arms which, having gained its license in
1863, claims to the the longest holder of a continuous liquor license
in Queensland. It is located on the New England Highway, tel: (07) 4696
6202.
