    Calliope
Sleepy town ideal for fishing, boating and getting away from the larger coastal holiday resort towns.
Located 536 km north of Brisbane and only 21 km from Gladstone (2 km west of the Bruce Highway), Calliope is a small settlement ideal for some quiet fishing and boating. It came into existence as Queensland's first officially proclaimed goldfield in 1863, went through a period of decline, and in recent times has experienced a minor boom as a result of the increasing importance of Gladstone.

The town was named after the HMS Calliope in 1854. It was around this time that settlers moved into the area. The town was surveyed and alluvial gold was found in the early 1860s. The population had reached 800 by 1864 but most of the gold was gone by the end of the decade. After that the town continued as a service centre for the local beef industry.

Calliope still attracts gold fossickers and there are local deposits of petrified wood and chalcedony as well. The Diggers Arms was built during the gold boom and stands today as a reminder of the town's colourful past. Other reminders have recently been added with the construction of the Calliope River Historical Village. Most visitors see Calliope as a quiet retreat for fishing and boating.
