Dunmarra
A major roadhouse on the Stuart Highway.
Located 314 km south of Katherine and only 8 km
south of the junction of the Buchanan Highway and the Stuart Highway,
Dunmarra is basically a roadhouse which combines a caravan park with
motel accommodation, petrol, and a bar, and that is it.
The importance of Dunmarra is based entirely on its small
role in the history of the Overland Telegraph Line. It was 27 km south
of Dunmarra that the construction team moving from the south met the
construction team which had been building the line from the north.
Things to see:
Overland Telegraph Line
There is a monument to the Overland Telegraph Line
beside the Stuart Highway south of Dunmarra. It has three poles in the
style of the original line. The plaque reads: 'The Overland Telegraph
Line. This plaque was erected in memory of Sir Charles Todd,
Postmaster-General of the Province of South Australia. His gallant
construction teams, operators, and linesmen...the northern and southern
parts of this epic overland telegraph line were finally joined about
one mile west of this spot by R. C. Paterson, engineer, at 3.15pm on
Thursday August 22, 1872 thus making possible for the first time
instantaneous telegraph communication between Australia and Great
Britain.'
