Yarragon
A small town which has been turned into a
tourist attraction known as the 'colonial shopping village'.
Yarragon is small town 120 km east of Melbourne and
only 10 km from Warragul in the heart of the La Trobe Valley's dairy
district. It promotes itself as a "Colonial shopping village" and
consequently is a town full of antique and craft shops designed to
attract the visitor. The origin of these modern changes occurred when
John and Maree Dunn, set up a colonial-style shop and tea room called
"Dairy Delicacies". Their aim was to sell Gippsland cheeses, as well as
home-made, natural ice creams and yoghurts, jams, chutneys and
Gippsland honeys. This led to a motel being built nearby in a "colonial
style". Also, the old Yarragon Presbyterian Church (1917) was converted
into a handicrafts shop. The success of the initial ventures led to the
establishment of Yarragon Antiques, The Brunch and Browse House and The
House of Lancaster which caters to renovators wanting "colonial"-type
items.
The region is now called the "Gourmet Deli District" which is
a route (or two) which take in various interesting food shops
throughout the general region.
