Trafalgar (including Childers and Thorpdale)
Service town surrounded by dairy and potato
growing country
Trafalgar is located 124 km south-east of Melbourne
(between Warragul and Moe) on the Princes Highway and 68 m above sea
level. It is situated in a rich, agricultural district. Dairying is the
major industry, though other products are farmed and timber from the
Upper Latrobe and Tanjil River Valleys is milled.
The town was established in the 1860s and was named after the
famous battle in which the British, under Nelson, defeated the French
and Spanish fleets.
South-west of Trafalgar is Childers which was named
after the little-known British and Victorian parliamentarian, Hugh
Childers.
Things to see:
Thorpdale
Thorpdale, 13 km south of Trafalgar, is a
former railway terminus, with a name meaning "village in a valley". It
was once a business centre for the timber mills and the fruit and dairy
farms of the undulating countryside. The town was largely destroyed by
the great bushfire of 1898. Today it is surrounded by potato and dairy farming.
Scenic Highlights
There are a number of scenic attractions in the
area. The most interesting are the Narracan Falls, the Trafalgar South
Lookout and Henderson's Gully.
