Strathmerton
Small
Murray River township
Strathmerton is a small town located on the Murray
Valley Highway near the state border. It is 15 km due west of Cobram and 229 km north of Melbourne. The
land hereabouts was taken up by Benjamin Boyd (see entry on Eden) in 1841. He initially named his property
'Ulupna' but later changed it to Strathmerton from 'Merton', the name
of his family home in England, and 'strath' meaning 'valley'. Today it
is home to a large cheese factory.
