Rosedale
Small
service centre in the heart of Gippsland
Rosedale is a pastoral and agricultural town 184 km
east of Melbourne via the Princes Highway. Once a staging post on the
Port Albert to Sale coach run, it is now the administrative centre of
the Rosedale shire which extends to the east and includes Ninety Mile Beach.
The earliest European inhabitant in the district is
thought to have been a man named Blind Joe who lived in a hut on the
Latrobe River. The town is named after and built upon the site of a
station owned by David Parry-Okedon, who, in 1843, called his run
Rosedale after his wife, Rosalie.
The area was once part of the Holey Plain grazing run, owned
by the Curlewis brothers. Edward Cooke, who emigrated to Australia in
1837 and purchased a station at Omeo in the early 1840s, used the run
as a holding station for the livestock which he drove to Port Albert
for shipment to Van Dieman's Land. He later leased the property and his
son built an impressive homestead with a four-tiered tower on the site
in 1889. Cooke's descendants still live in the district.
Things to see:
Nambrok and buildings of historic interest
"Nambrok", located 8 km east of Rosedale, is an
unusual, striking and architecturally significant brick mansion built
in the 1860s for the pastoralist grandson of Philip King, New South
Wales' third governor. Essentially a product of the classical revival
it features a series of arches supported on columns, bay windows, Dutch
gables, and a stout central tower. Unfortunately it is not open to the
public. The Rosedale mechanics institute and a hotel also survive from
the nineteenth century.
The Strzelecki Ranges
Rosedale is a good starting point for scenic
excursions throughout the district and constitutes the major approach
point to the Grand Ridge Road, which winds along the backbone of the
Strzelecki Ranges. See also Mirboo North.
Holey Plains State Park
5 km south-east is Holey Plains State Park, with its
small swamps, forests and woodlands of white and prickly stringybark,
peppermint, banksia, golden grevilleas, the rare Gippsland grey box
and, in spring, an assortment of wildflowers. A series of enjoyable
nature drives are outlined in local pamphlets and a picnic can be
enjoyed at Holey Hill, which can be reached by travelling along the
Rosedale to Stradbroke Road.
