Dandenongs settlement noted for its galleries and gardens
Olinda is a small and rather beautiful settlement located 44 km east of the Melbourne city centre atop Mt Dandenong. It is noted for its scenic situation and its many art, antique and handicraft galleries. The golf course on the Olinda-Monbulk Rd offers excellent views.

The Wurrundjeri people once inhabited this area, passing on to Yarra Valley where they passed their summers on the banks of the Yarra River. The first European known to set foot in the Dandenongs was botanist Daniel Bunce who was drawn from Melbourne by the image of the looming western slopes in 1839. Guided by a party of Aboriginal people he climbed Mt Corhanwarrabul (628 m) and Mt Dandenong (633 m) - the two highest peaks in the ranges. Bourkes Lookout (see subsequent entry) is now situated atop the former.

The first European settlers in the Olinda area were the Holden family who camped on the slopes from 1855 and felled mountain ash until the turn of the century. Official settlement began in the 1870s and fruit-growing accompanied timbergetting. Guest houses and tea rooms were established to encourage tourists when fruit prices fell.

Olinda was the only settlement in the hills to be formally laid out thanks largely to the efforts of John Dodd who opened the first shop in the main street in 1893. Distinguished Australian artist Arthur Streeton bought a house here in the 1920s. Novelist Arthur Upfield stayed at a lodge on Mount Dandenong in 1938 and used the area as the setting for two of his detective novels, The Devil's Step (1946) and An Author Bites the Dust (1948).

Markets are held at Olinda on the second Sunday of each month.

The National Rhododendron Gardens

The National Rhododendron Gardens
The National Rhododendron Gardens attract 50 000 to 60 000 visitors annually. They are set in a natural amphitheatre of mountain ash, oaks, maples and beeches which tower over 43 ha of outstanding botanic gardens which are home to 15 000 rhododendrons, 12 000 azaleas, 250 000 daffodils, cherry tree groves and laburnums, all of which blossom in spring. The 3000 camellias are best seen in winter and there are also proteas, magnolias and Japanese maples. Birdlife includes the superb lyrebird, king parrots, crimson rosellas and peacocks. Ducks and geese can be fed in the lake.

Self-guide walk signs open up the possibility of a full three-hour exploration or you can simply pursue shorter sub-sections. The paths offer outstanding views of the Australian Alps which form a backdrop to the east, beyond Silvan Reservoir Park (see entry on Kalorama).

There is a cafe, an information centre, a gift shop, a gatehouse, a nursery, gazebos, grassed picnic areas, moorlands, rock gardens, fern gullies and toilet facilities for people with limited mobility. In spring and autumn there are special garden tours, talks and demonstrations. The Spring Floral Festival (the largest undercover display of daffodils in the Southern Hemisphere) is held from August to October, the Camellia Show is in September and the Rhododendron Show features displays in the show hall in October and November. Summer Jazz is held in January and the Autumn Festival in April.

The ducks on the Upper Pond, National Rhododendron Gardens

The Gardens are open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. daily. The entry fee, as at 1 November 1999 is $6.50 for adults, $4.50 for concessions and $2 for children (under 10s are allowed in at no charge). To get there turn off the Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd onto the Olinda-Monbulk Rd and you will soon come to a left turn into Georgian Rd. It is a short distance to the carpark opposite the main entrance.

R.J. Hamer Forest Arboretum
The R.J. Hamer Forest Arboretum (100 ha) has an outstanding collection of over 150 native and exotic tree and shrub species from around the world, including maples, liquidambers, ash, elms, birch, conifers and oaks (which are at their best in autumn). There are bushwalking opportunities, picnic, barbecue, toilet and parking facilities. The site is open daily and entry is free unless you book a site. Tours are available by appointment, tel: 131 963. To get there head east of Olinda along the Monbulk Rd then turn left into Chalet Rd which leads past the entrance.

Cloudehill
If you ignore the turnoff into Chalet Rd and continue south along the Olinda-Monbulk Rd, you will soon pass Cloudehill on the left-hand side of the road, at the intersection with Woolrich Rd. These award-winning formal gardens were inspired by the Art and Craft style of design. Adjacent the carpark is the nursery which features rare and unusual trees, perennials and shrubs. A path leads east, parallel to Woolrich Rd, by the Water Garden. Opposite the Water Garden, a path leads south through the middle of a 'warm'-coloured perennials garden with herbaceous borders to the architectural centre of the gardens - the Maple Court with its two outstanding Japanese Weeping Maples. On the eastern side of the Maple Court is the Green Theatre where twilight music recitals are held in summer.

Return to the Maple Court and continue walking south along the pathway which leads through a 'cool'-coloured perennials garden with herbaceous borders to the Summer House. A series of steps lead west to a topiary lawn.

After visiting the Topiary Lawn walk east back past the Summer House and around to the Bulb Meadow, the Copper Beech Walk, the Kejoma Garden and the Azalea Steps which are surrounded on either side by huge Ghent azaleas under-planted with lilliums. These steps will take you to the Peony Pavilion (best seen in spring). From the pavilion, the Rose Walk heads west back towards the carpark. En route, just before you reach the Water Garden, some steps on the right lead to a quadrangle and a lawned area with a marquee (behind the Peony Pavilion). Return to the Rose Walk which continues westwards, back to the carpark.

Cloudehill's formal gardens are surrounded by woodlands of maple, beech, magnolia and rhododendron which feature fields of bluebells, daffodils, nerines and grape hyacinths. The trees date back to the earliest days of the Woolrich Nursery and are now quite historic.

Cloudehill is open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. except from June to August when it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. There is an admission fee, tel: (03) 9751 1009.

Pirianda Garden
Further south on the Olinda-Monbulk Rd is a turnoff on the right into Hacketts Rd. To the immediate left is Pirianda Garden (11 ha) which has rare, exotic and native plant species, all individually named. Its steep slopes are terraced and walking tracks pass through fern gullies where currawongs, crimson and eastern rosellas, butcher birds, honeyeaters and kookaburras make their homes. It is possible to see Arthurs Seat (see entry on Dromana) and the Mornington Peninsula on a clear day.

The Garden features plant species otherwise unknown in Australia and it is particularly beautiful in autumn when the exotic trees are at their finest. The azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolias bloom in spring and summer offers hydrangeas, tree fern forest, giant lilies and, in the bog garden, hostas.

Pirianda House is available for conferences and meetings. The Garden is open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., tel: 131 963. There is no admission fee and tours are available by appointment.

Mount Dandenong
Mount Dandenong is a village located a few kilometres north of Olinda on the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. Opposite the Mt Dandenong Hotel is the Mountain Ash Trading Company which sells Australian-made personal and home care products. It is open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., tel: (03) 9751 1303. Also opposite the hotel is A Bowl of Roses - a gift shop specialising in handpainting and embroidery. It is open daily, tel: (03) 9751 1586.

Edward Henty Cottage
At Mount Dandenong, Ridge Rd veers north-west off Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. Not far along is Henty on the Hill - an antique gallery which is situated in a prefabricated home dating from the 1850s. It was once the home of Edward Henty who became one of the first Europeans to settle in Victoria when he decamped at Portland in 1834. The cottage was moved from Portland in the 1970s. The gallery specialises in 19th-century Australian cedar items. It is open Fridays from 11.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and weekends and public holidays from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., tel: (03) 9751 1034.

Bourkes Lookout
Further along Ridge Rd there is a signposted turnoff on the left into Eyre Rd which leads to Bourkes Lookout, offering excellent views of Melbourne on a clear day.

Mt Dandenong Observatory
If you continue along Ridge Rd you will soon come to a turnoff on the left into Observatory Rd which will take you to Mount Dandenong Observatory. At 633 m above sea-level (the highest point in the Dandenongs) it offers outstanding views of Melbourne, Port Phillip Bay, the You Yangs and Mt Macedon. It is accessible from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. daily. A kiosk operates in business hours and a $2 fee (per car) is collected for portions of the day. William Ricketts Sanctuary
Just north of the suburb of Mount Dandenong, on the western side of the Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, is the rather beautiful and very tranquil William Ricketts Sanctuary which features a series of kiln-fired clay sculptures executed by William Ricketts who bought this land in 1934. From 1949 to 1960 he made numerous trips to Central Australia to live with the Pitjantjatjara and Arrernte Aboriginal people whose culture and traditions inspired his sculpture. From 1970 to 1972 he lived in India where he felt a spiritual affinity with the Indian people. While there he spent some time at an ashram in Pondicherry. Ricketts continued to live and work on his four-acre plot until his death, at the age of 94 years, in 1993.

Ricketts' figurative works were inspired by the attitude of the Aboriginal people towards the land and they are designed to express his view that all people should follow the example of the indigenous people and act as custodians (rather than lords and masters) of the natural environment. The works are artfully situated amidst moss-covered rocks, trickling waterfalls, mountain ash, moist fern gardens and meandering paths, in such a way that they appear to be a part of the natural environment they inhabit. The ambience is tranquil and meditative.

There are toilets, water, a gatehouse/shop, an information centre, a gallery, a kiln display area and an audio-visual display. Car parking is available opposite the sanctuary and the entry fee, as at 1 November 1999, is $5 for adults and $4 for concessions (children under 10 allowed in at no charge). Picnics, dogs and smoking are forbidden. The sanctuary is open from 10.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily. A bus service operates from Croydon railway station, tel: 131 963.

Dandenong Ranges National Park
Dandenong Ranges National Park (3215 ha) is a very attractive and popular attraction which beckons Melburnians who can gaze upon its western slopes on a clear day. It was declared in 1987, although this declaration represented the amalgamation of diverse sections which were already reserved.

It offers opportunities for walking, sightseeing, picnicking, nature observation and car touring. More than 350 plant species have been recorded in the park, including the rare cinnamon wattle and smooth tea-tree, 130 bird species, 31 species of mammals (most are nocturnal), 21 reptile species and nine amphibians.

The Park is divided into five sections. The eastern section is known as Olinda (790 ha) which is Spanish for 'Oh, most beautiful'. It extends from Olinda north to Kalorama and east towards Silvan Reservoir Park. It features a relatively undisturbed habitat.

The gang-gang cockatoo, superb parrot, lyrebird and wedge-tailed eagle, possums, bats and gliders (all nocturnal), swamp wallabies and the rare broad-toothed rat are all found in this section of the park which consists primarily of dry forest of messmate and narrow-leaved peppermint eucalyptus, although there are wetter gullies where tree ferns, manna gum, mountain grey gum and swamp gum can be found. There are three picnic areas in the Olinda section (for further information on these see separate entries below).

Olinda Falls Picnic Ground
To access Olinda Falls Picnic Ground turn east off Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd into Falls Rd which runs along the western boundary of the Olinda section then rejoins the Tourist Rd near Kalorama. It leads past the picnic ground which provides access to Olinda Falls.

The Valley and Eagle Nest Picnic Grounds
To access the Valley Picnic Ground head east off the Tourist Rd along the Olinda-Monbulk Rd, turn left into Chalet Rd, past the Woolrich Lookout, left again into Silvan Rd then left into Boundary Rd. The latter passes through a couple of gates which must be closed as you pass through and it veers sharply to the right before reaching the carpark which is the starting point for both the Eagle Nest Walk (3 km one-way) and the much steeper and longer (6.5 km) Valley Walk which is only for experienced and fit walkers. They pass through a range of forest types (mountain grey gums, fern gullies and dry bushland). The former track slopes downhill (with the toilets to the left) and connects with Eagle Nest Rd which will take you to the Eagle Nest Picnic Ground. Once there, cross the wooden bridge and continue for 400 m. From here you can return to Valley Picnic Ground via Hermons Track or extend the walk by turning right into Possum Track, right into Georges Rd, left into Barges Rd (steep) and return to Valley Picnic Ground via Rifle Range Gully Track.

Further north along Silvan Road there is another turnoff on the left into Eagle Nest Rd which leads to the Eagle Nest Picnic Ground. The appropriate turnoffs are signposted. If you follow Silvan Rd further north you can turn left into Olinda Creek Rd which leads west back to the Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd.

The Doongalla Section
A windy gravel road, known as The Basin-Olinda Rd, heads due west from Olinda. It represents the eastern access point to the Park's Doongalla section which occupies the steep and heavily timbered western slopes of the Dandenongs. The road is corrugated in places and there are some tight corners but it is navigable in a 2WD with care. The main attraction in this part of the park is the Doongalla Picnic Ground. To get there follow The Basin-Olinda Rd. As you come into The Basin turn right into Sheffield Rd then, after about 500 m, turn right again into Doongalla Rd. After about another 500 m there is an intersection. Keep to the left and this road will take you through to the picnic ground.

A homestead was built on this picnic ground in 1908 as 'Invermay' and later renamed 'Doongalla'. It was destroyed by a 1932 bushfire although the servant's quarters and stables remain. Later owners continued to log the forest until the government bought back the estate in 1950 and it was declared a reserve.

Rhododendrons bloom at the picnic area in spring. There are a number of short and well-signposted walking tracks or the more ambitious can start at the Doongalla Stables carpark, take the Stables track downhill through eucalypt forest, turn left at Bills Track, left at Edgars Track then, after 150 m, take another left into Golf Course Track. Pass by Invermay Track to get onto the Doongalla Forest Access Road which will return you to the Stables site. The picnic area can be booked for events or functions, tel: 131 963.

The gullies along Dandenong Creek, near the homestead site, support mountain ash communities while the drier more exposed slopes are characterised by long-leaved box and red stringybark communities. Birdlife in this section of the park includes pardalote, mistletoe birds, ravens, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, thornbills, eastern yellow robins, New Holland honeyeaters, whipbirds, golden whistlers, boobook and powerful owls. Goannas, grass skinks and echidnas can be seen in the daytime although most of the park's mammals are nocturnal.

Galleries and Craft Shops of Olinda
Bush Creatures Gallery is located at 545 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd. It features the sculpture of Peter Delahenty who specialises in the rendering of birds and other wildlife in clay and native woods. It is open Wednesday to Sunday and public holidays from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., tel: (03) 9751 1801.

The Lace Shop stocks a large range of handmade lace, table linen, dolls, bedspreads, cushions and pure cotton nightgowns, as well as a large selection of quality limited edition porcelain dolls and giftware. It is open daily from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and located in the shopping centre at the intersection of the Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd and the Olinda-Monbulk Rd, tel: (03) 9751 1814.

In the same centre, just along the Olinda-Monbulk Rd, are Mangana Crafts. They are open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. daily, tel: (03) 9751 1780.

The Real Thing Craft Centre is at 13-15 the Olinda-Monbulk Rd. It features the pottery, jewellery, woodwork, pewter and bronze sculpture, hand-painted silks and hand-blown glass of over 200 Australian craftspeople spread out over five rooms of an historic cottage. The centre is open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on weekdays and from 10.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on weekends, tel: (03) 9751 1616.

Colonial Heritage sells local handicrafts and giftware. They run classes in all sorts of craftwork and are open Tuesday to Friday from 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. and weekends from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Colonial Heritage is located at 25 Olinda-Monbulk Rd, tel: (03) 9751 1371.

At 112 Olinda-Monbulk Rd is Coonara Gallery which offers contemporary and traditional prints by Australian and overseas artists, bookplates and illustrated books, etchings, linocuts, woodcuts, wood engravings, lithographs, serigraphs, monotypes, drawings and photographs. Olinda Art Gallery displays the work of well-known Australian artists and printmakers. Local art is featured and there is original fine art for sale. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and is located just off the Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, in Parsons Lane, tel: (03) 9751 1813.

Touchstone Craft Gallery has four rooms displaying the work of about 100 Australian craftspeople, including jewellery, glass, pottery, leather and wood. They are located opposite the mill in Monash Ave and are open weekdays from 11.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and weekends from 11.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., tel: (03) 9751 1715.

Olinda Craft Cottage is located at 1548 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd in Olinda North. It sells souvenirs, giftware, pottery, knitwear and other arts and crafts by local people and is open daily from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., tel: (03) 9751 1861.

Galleries and Craft Shops of Sassafras
Sassafras is a small township located a few kilometres south of Olinda on the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. It features many art-and-craft shops and galleries.

Marian's Bushcraft sells a large range of Australian crafts, arts and souvenirs including Aboriginal cottage crafts, pottery, ceramics, individualized gift packs, woodcraft, textiles, biscuits, jams, cordials, lollies and chocolates made on the premises. The shop is located at 351 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd. They are open daily from 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., tel: (03) 9755 2776.

At the same address is Romantique at Heart which sells teddy bears, antique furniture, silver etc. Winners of a Merit award from Dandenong Ranges Tourism they are open daily, tel: (03) 9755 2661.

The Life Style Gallery specialises in Indian antiques and contemporary handcrafted furniture, specialty homewares and unusual gifts. They are located at 371 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd and are open from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. from Thursday to Monday, tel: (03) 9755 1966.

Country Cottage Collection sells bears, dolls, throw rugs, floral plaques, baskets, candles, cards, country collectables, Australiana etc and is open daily from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. at 373 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, tel: (03) 9755 2267.

Craiglea Antiques has an unusual range of furniture, old wares and collectables. They are open every day but Tuesday and are located at 375 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, tel: (03) 9755 2961.

Tea Leaves is an award-winning enterprise which sells a wide array of teas and unusual tea pots, along with straight and flavoured coffees and chocolates. It is located at 380 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, just south of the Mountain Highway intersection, and is open daily from 10.00 a.m., tel: (03) 9755 2222.

The Wise Possum Nature Shop and Gallery offers wildlife paintings, sculptures, art and craft. It is open daily from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. and is located at 389 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, tel: (03) 9755 2256.

Antiques in Sassafras, located at 392 Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, sells Victorian and Edwardian furniture, silver, jewellery, books, lamps and china. They are open from 11.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. weekdays and until 5.30 p.m. on weekends, tel: (03) 9755 2199.

Ross Gallery, at the corner of the Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd and Wallaby Ave, features diamond and opal jewellery and original artworks displayed within an old church (c.1902). It is open from Saturday to Wednesday and public holidays from 11.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., tel: (03) 9755 2081.

Eloy Van Paridon is an importer of fine antiques, romantic light fittings, clocks and paintings. It is located on the Mt Dandenong Tourist Rd, just south of the Mountain Highway intersection, tel: (03) 9755 1111.

Chudleigh Park of Sassafras offers luncheons and teas amidst a collection of arts and crafts and 5 acres of excellent gardens. It is open Saturday to Wednesday from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and is located in Chudleigh Crescent, tel: (03) 9755 2320.

Heidelberg School Artists Trail
This route is designed to take interested parties to the approximate sites depicted in the paintings of those associated with the Heidelberg School (i.e., Arthur Streeton, Walter Withers, Louis Buvelot, Tom Roberts, Clara Southern, David Davies, Emanuel Phillips Fox, Charles Conder, Tudor St George Tucker, Eigene Von Guerard, May Vale and Jane Price).

At each such site there is a reproduction of the relevant painting, providing insight into the artist's interpretation of the landscape and into how the landscape has changed since that time. It passes largely along the Yarra River, through Heidelberg, Bulleen, Templestowe, Eltham, Diamond Creek, Research, Warrandyte, passing through Ringwood and Montrose, en route to Kalorama, Olinda, Kallista and Upper Ferntree Gully.
