Milawa
Tiny centre with some interesting primary
produce outlets
Milawa is a small service centre to a farming and
wine-producing area. It is located 239 km north-east of Melbourne and
15 km south-east of Wangaratta. The
centre of Milawa is, and always has been, The Crossroads where Snow Rd
(the road to Myrtleford, Bright, Mount Buffalo, Mount Beauty and Mount Hotham) and Factory Rd (to
Wangaratta) meet. Settlement of the area began in the 1840s.
Today the town is a centre for a range of craft
activities, interesting food industries and vineyards - the most famous
of which is Brown Brothers.
Things to see:
Milawa Mustards
Here you will find Milawa Mustards located in the
Old Emu Inn building (1861) which once served goldminers en route to
the Ovens Valley, bullock teams supplying the goldfields and Cobb & Co
coaches which once used it as a stopover. The musical accomplishments
of the licensee's daughters made the inn something of an entertainment centre.
The building later served as the Milawa police
station. The old lock-up (brought from Beechworth by bullock team at
the end of the 19th century) is still on the property, as is a
19th-century barn made of handmade bricks from clay dug out in the cellar.
Milawa Mustards offer a wide variety of mustards, herb
vinegars and preserves made from locally grown ingredients. The tasting
room is open Thursday to Tuesday from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., tel:
(03) 5727 3202.
The Crossroads
Also at the Crossroads are the Commercial Hotel, a
country bakery, and a general store cum coffee lounge situated in some
old and much altered buildings. A couple of doors west of the hotel is
'Ercildoon' (c.1858), an attractive house which is now a
bed-and-breakfast. The old stables, blacksmith's shop, shearing shed
and original horse-drawn transport are still to be seen on the property.
Milawa Cheese Company
Just to the north of The Crossroads, along Factory
Rd, is the Milawa Cheese Company which sells award-winning cheeses,
including a variety of sheep and goat's milk cheeses. Sales, tastings
and a ploughman's platter are available daily from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00
p.m., tel: (03) 5727 3588.
Brown Brothers Winery
The oldest winery in the district is the Brown
Brothers Winery which has operated since 1889. It is slightly south of
The Crossroads along Snow Rd and produces an extensive range of table,
sparkling and fortified wines. Brown Brothers is open daily from 9.00
a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with a restaurant, picnic-barbecue facilities and a
children's playground, tel: (03) 5720 5547.
Former Flour Mill
West along Snow Rd is an enormous old four-storey
steam-driven brick flour mill constructed in the 1860s of local bricks.
Surrounding the ground floor of the mill is a timber apron. A large
brick chimney has been demolished.
Walkabout Apiaries
Further west again, on the Snow Rd, are Walkabout
Apiaries who have fresh honeys available for tastings and sales. They
are open most days from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., tel: (03) 5727 3468.
Oxley
The shire hall at Oxley (4
km west of Milawa) is an attractive structure built of coloured local
bricks in 1875 with side wings added in the 1890s. It is set well back
from the road and features moulded arched openings.
King Valley Cellar markets wines from local
vineyards such as Moyhu Estate, King Valley Vineyard, Lana-Trento and
Chrismont Wines (see entry on Whitfield for listings on these
individual vineyards). It is open every day but Tuesday from 10.00 a.m.
to 6.00 p.m., tel: (03) 5727 3777.
At the corner of Green and Simpson Sts in Oxley are
Willandra Orchids who specialise in Cymbidium orchids. They are open
all day every day except Tuesdays when they open at 1.30 p.m., tel:
(03) 5727 3563.
Oxley's Wineries
Reads Winery is located at Evans Lane by the King
River. It offers chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, crouchen, cabernet,
shiraz and ports and is open daily, tel: (03) 5727 3386.
Also in Evans Lane are Ciavarella Wines (signposted from
the Snow Rd), established in 1978. They produce dry and semi-sweet
wines and ports from shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, chenin
blanc and semillon. The cellar door is open from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.
every day but Sunday when it opens at 10.00 a.m., tel: (03) 5727 3384.
John Gehrig Wines, established in 1976, is also
signposted off the Snow Rd. It has produced award-winning dry whites,
medium to full-bodied reds, methode champenoise pinot noir and
traditional fortifieds. The cellar door is open from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00
p.m. every day but Sunday when it opens at 10.00 a.m., tel: (03) 5727 3395.
Markwood Estate
6 km east along Snow Rd is Markwood. A signpost
directs you to Morris Lane where you will find Markwood Estate which is
open daily. They have small plantings of cabernet sauvignon shiraz,
chardonnay, semillon, specialising in soft dry reds, whites and ports,
tel: (03) 5727 0361.
Wood Park Wines
Wood Park Wines, established in 1989, is a picturesque
vineyard located in wooded hills below the Victorian Alps at
Bobinawarrah in the Lower King Valley. To get there follow the Snow Rd
east of Milawa for 7 km. 1 km beyond Markwood, take the signposted
right onto the Carboor Rd. After 7 km you will reach an intersection.
Turn left here onto the Whorouly Rd and, after 3 km, a signpost will
direct you into the winery's driveway on the left. It is noted for its
cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and chardonnay and the owners are happy to
see visitors but it is best to ring first , tel: (03) 5727 3367.
