Meeniyan
(including Koonwarra)
Small country town with a number of excellent
craft shops
Meeniyan is a small country town located 150 km east of
Melbourne and 15 km south-east of Leongatha. It is claimed that the
town's name is derived from a local Aboriginal word meaning 'moon
behind the trees over the water'. An alternative interpretation says
'maneyanin' was an Aboriginal word meaning 'moon'.
Things to see:
Craft Shops
In recent times a number of craftspeople have moved
into the Meeniyan area and this has resulted in many of the town's
older shops converting to craft shops. The most notable is Craft
Merchants in the main street which has 'ten rooms of craftware,
Australiana and Victoriana' and is open from 10.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.
seven days a week during school holidays and five days a week (closed
Monday and Tuesday) outside school holidays. Contact (03) 5664 7533.
Bushwalk
A 3 km Bicentennial bush
walk has been marked out around the perimeter of the town. It offers
visitors an opportunity to walk through the bush which surrounds the
small settlement.
Lyre Bird Hill Winery
8 km north-east of Meeniyan, via the South Gippsland
Highway, is Koonwarra. 4 km south-east of Koonwarra, on Inverloch Rd,
is Lyre Bird Hill Winery, established in 1987. It produces riesling,
chardonnay, traminer, pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and
sparkling wines. The cellar door is open from 10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
